I'm the ABC Climate reporting team's inaugural graphics guy, and I could not be more excited about what lies ahead.

Climate reporting is full of really big challenges: technical jargon, big stats, repetitive headlines, doom and gloom — all in a space that's rife with misinformation. Visual storytelling is key to making this information accessible and engaging, in the face of news avoidance especially. How do we navigate a changing, warming world? Our team aims to explain — with context and reporting that can empower readers to understand the full picture for themselves. It's no small task.

How will Australia's energy transition impact its regions and farm lands? What is the role of Big Oil and Mining in this economic shift? Who is the most vulnerable to increasingly frequent extreme weather events? Where do we look to for hope?

So much to dig into. I'm really looking forward to it :)

Sensitive data requires thoughtful presentation. For this story about police failures responding to domestic violence incidences, I put on safety goggles and shattered some glass. Each shard represents a chilling story — much better than a chart can.

While the process was actually quite dangerous, it was also very simple. I photographed the glass outdoors with my iPhone in an afternoon. You wouldn't get the same result using Photoshop. #datahumanism
