African cities are hurdling faster and faster towards development, in an attempt to keep pace with growing populations and industries, amidst economic and sometimes social instability. There’s this assumption that the future means new and shiny innovation - and this silver bullet approach often comes at the detriment of rich traditions, culture and deeply rooted systems.
Reimagining the future of African cities is not necessarily about entirely new design, but instead about weaving what exists (and often already works!) with services, products or systems that might help these crucial shared spaces be more resilient, safe and functional in the face of imminent climate shifts and continued economic complexity.
