"Am I 𝙜𝙤𝙤𝙙 𝙚𝙣𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝 to become a top tech PM?" is a question I get all the time. Here's my answer:

👇

1️⃣ 𝗠𝗜𝗡𝗗𝗦𝗘𝗧

When I was first applying to Google, this thought also crossed my mind.

After all, Google, Amazon, Facebook and other top tech companies are notoriously selective when hiring.

Top universities like Harvard have an extremely low acceptance rate of ~3-4%, but even that is significantly higher than Google’s ~0.65% acceptance rate.

So you may think it's a reasonable question: 𝗮𝗺 𝗜 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵?

The simple answer is this:

Whether 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗿𝗲 or 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝘆𝗼𝘂'𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁 — you're right.

2️⃣ 𝗕𝗘𝗦𝗧 𝗢𝗙 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗕𝗘𝗦𝗧

The odds of making it into FAANG don’t look great.

They create the impression that the top tech companies are places where only the best of the best can ever hope to make it.

But best of the best at what, exactly?

3️⃣ 𝗣𝗠 𝗝𝗢𝗕 𝗥𝗘𝗤𝗨𝗜𝗥𝗘𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗦

What is Google looking for in its Product Managers?

Partially, they tell you the answer on their career website:

✅ Understand customer’s needs + priorities

✅ Gather requirements, set the roadmap

✅ Identify risks, work with stakeholders

✅ Develop solutions to hard problems

✅ Collaborate across regions and functions

✅ Write detailed PRDs

✅ Manage complex set of stakeholders

Candidates invited to an interview will get additional insights into what Google is looking for:

✅ Leading end-to-end prod. development

✅ Driving execution

✅ Generating creative vision

✅ Developing product launch plans

✅ Data-driven decision-making

✅ Motivating cross-functional teams

✅ Conducting market/competitor research

This same story repeats for all top tech companies, with minor tweaks.

Now take another look at that list of activities.

If you’re a PM with some experience, chances are that 𝘆𝗼𝘂'𝘃𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆.

Even if you’re just starting out, you've still likely done a lot of these.

4️⃣ 𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗠𝗔𝗞𝗘 𝗢𝗙 𝗜𝗧

There is a lot more I could say about what it takes to actually 𝗯𝗲 the "best of the best" in all the PM activities and skills we covered above.

And there's a lot more to say about how to actually show the interviewer that you're the best of the best in these.

But I want it to be abundantly clear that there is no rocket science 🚀 or brain surgery 🧠 going on here.

It is not easy.

But it is simple.

And it is very doable.
