What do pyjamas and satellites have in common?
Well the answer is that many of us were in our pyjamas just shy of 5am on Saturday morning, watching SpaceX’s Transporter 11 launching a record breaking 116 satellites into Space! These satellites came from all over the world including Australia, but there was one in particular very close to my heart - the Waratah Seed 1 satellite (and CUAVA 2 as well!).
This satellite offered a critical opportunity for emerging space startups to be able to qualify their technology without needing to fund their own satellite and launch. This is often a chicken-egg situation for space companies, where the ability to secure customers and other forms of investment are greatly influenced by space heritage. But having space heritage for your technology is not cheap for an early stage business! It is projects like this that have a compounding impact back to the industry as they enable space companies to reach a key milestone in their journey much earlier on. Thank you to all groups that have been involved in making this project a reality - Investment NSW, SmartSat CRC, Delta V, ARC Training Centre for CubeSats, UAVs, and their Applications (CUAVA), and all others involved!
This launch in particular has signified the growth and trajectory of the industry, with a new record of satellites on a single ride share, Falcon 9 rocket’s 12th successful landing, and Exolaunch’s 30th launch, our industry is not only growing but maturing as well. As we look to the new players of the space industry that will contribute to its sustainable expansion I celebrate 6 of our Cicada Innovations National Space Industry Hub residents and Fast Start alumni that were on the Waratah Seed 1 satellite: Deneb Space Contactile Extraterrestrial Power EurokaPower Mawson Rovers Spiral Blue
Reach out to these amazing companies to learn about what they are doing to make space better for us on Earth.
If you would like to watch this launch, check it out here: https://lnkd.in/gZQEpykB. The view of Earth from space is always such a beautiful sight especially with the weather so clear this time.
A video is included with great background lighting thanks to my son’s space themed night light (the room I had to watch in so as not to wake everyone else up!).

After a full week meeting with international delegations, businesses, and government representatives at the Andy Thomas Foundation Space Forum, it's nice to finally get a chance to reflect.
Whilst great to see familiar faces from the National Space Industry Hub, it was exciting to see the level of engagement with our residents and international visitors across Korea, India, and the US. This highlighted the benefit of curated delegation visits that happened in Sydney being amplified with follow ups at and after the Space Forum.
It was a privilege to host a panel of strong female entrepreneurs, Mary from ANT61, Sheila from Starbound Space Solutions , and Ruby from Aquila as we explored building sustainable space businesses. The power of community and mentorship in helping businesses grow and unlock new opportunities was glaringly clear.
A notable talk included Omar Pimentel the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) who so eloquently put how the DIU engages with the space sector, a model that starts with a simple couple slide pitch deck submission. With Cicada Innovations being the Deep Tech Silicon Valley of Sydney, what a great opportunity for our local defence industry to get similarly engaged!
So what does this all mean for our industry right?
- If you are starting a new venture - you are not alone! There is a village around in commercialisation programs, industry mentors, and passionate members of the ecosystem that want to see our industry grow. So use these resources, tools, and people to help you accelerate your journey! If you want a place to start, then start by visiting the National Space Industry Hub where you will find all of this under one roof.
- International collaboration is key and with more and more international relationships growing through government relations use these warm channels to open doors that would not otherwise be visible to you. Speak to Austrade, speak to your state government and keep an eye out for opportunities for delegation visits which will help streamline exploration of international collaboration. At the National Space Industry Hub, we also manage international relationships with other tech hubs to support our community in countries like Japan, India, and France.
- I think this is a great opportunity for the Defence Industry to see how other Defence agencies have successfully engaged with the tech ecosystem, and lean in to proactively engage with great early stage businesses developing some amazing dual-use capabilities. With a need to accelerate capability into this critical sector, what better way than being able to get involved with the deep tech community already developing amazing capabilities that could be leveraged both in Defence and industry.
Big call out to the friendlies I 'selfied' with along the way! ANT61, Starbound Space Solutions, Aquila, Deneb Space, Spiral Blue, LeoLabs, Investment NSW, SmartSat CRC , SRN, Dyana S., Main Sequence and the many more I have missed from this list!
