Alex Turvy

Sociology PhD student; former school operations leader and educator

Alex Turvy is a doctoral student in Sociology at Tulane University's City, Culture & Community program.1 Originally from Ohio, he has lived in New Orleans with his partner Devon since 2010.1 Turvy holds a Bachelor of Science in Literature and Philosophy from Miami University, where he completed an honors thesis using a Foucauldian lens to analyze Paradise Lost.1 He also earned a Master of Education from SUNY Binghamton.1

Before pursuing his doctoral studies, Turvy worked for ten years in local schools, including five years teaching Kindergarten and 1st Grade, and four years as a Director of Operations for a K-8 school.1 In his current role at Tulane, he serves as a Graduate Assistant of Recognized Student Organizations in the Lavin-Bernick Center for University Life.2

Turvy's research interests lie within the field of Science and Technology Studies (STS), focusing on topics such as the social meaning of the Internet, digital epistemology, hybrid-minds, internet-based epistemic tools, digital literacy, and how the modern internet shapes social relationships.1
