Organizing Yourself Out of Job
Just finished watching President Obama's 2024 Democratic National Convention speech. The DNC convention holds a special place as an Obama as it was the 2004 convention where his speech catapulted him into the national political consciousness. I still have chills watching the 2004 speech. It that speech + his biography at the time that ultimately led me to quitting my consulting job out of college to work as on the Obama 08' campaign as a field organizer in Oregon (District 24 baby).
For those who might not be familiar, a field organizer (aka FO) is basically the most entry level gig on a campaign. I had a small monthly stipend and slept for months in different volunteer's homes. I still remember getting the call when I got the offer. The deal was the job was mine if I can show up in Beaverton 3 days from now. I gave my notice the following morning and off I went to live my Aaron Sorkin West Wing campaign dream (def not the same btw).
For context, President Obama had also famously started his career as a community organizer in Chicago, so the FO organization as a whole had a level of pride that I felt was different versus other campaigns.
I remember an all-hands call with then candidate Barack Obama where we talked about what success looked like for our roles at FOs, and the jist was this: on Election Day, if you find yourself sitting around not knowing what to do with yourself because all the district captains and volunteers you have recruited, trained ,and empowered are all out in their communities getting out the vote and all you can really do now is join them, then you did good. There was really no other way to register thousands of voters and get them to the ballot box. You couldn't do it alone no matter your talent, resourcefulness, and grind.
Empowering your team to feel ownership and pride of their work is how big things happen.
I still have so much more to learn on how to embody this more in my professional life l but It was an early leadership lesson that I will never forget.
Harris/ Waltz campaign has generated such excitement among the next generation that I haven't felt since 08'. I hope they also feel that empowerment now to bring us forward. #yesshecan #yeswecan #firedupreadytogo
