𝗠𝘆 𝟯 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗻𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿

A couple of weeks ago, Paula Pastor Castaño and I hosted our first Babes and Business dinner. Once again, I was reminded of how much I learn from other women's experiences in balancing both career and parenthood. Here’s what stood out to me the most:

💃🏽 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗱𝗹𝘆 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗪𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗳 When applying for a job or reentering a job, don't shy away to be transparent about your life, including being a parent. This honesty not only sets clear expectations but also helps you evaluate if the company is truly family-friendly and aligned with your values. Don't hide significant parts of who you are to fit into preconceived notions or stereotypes.

💬 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 To thrive in any environment, it's crucial to understand your own needs and articulate them clearly to your team, partner, and anyone else involved. This isn't about being selfish; it's about ensuring that you are functioning at your best, which in turn benefits everyone around you.

💎 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 Becoming a parent doesn't diminish your worth although we women tend to think that. In fact, it often enhances your skills and perspective. Don't let fears about perceived productivity loss lead you to undervalue yourself. Know that your experiences as a parent contribute to your strengths, and don't hesitate to ask for the compensation you deserve.

🚩I personally think in the end it comes down to embracing your identity fully, advocating for your needs, and recognizing your intrinsic value. They are key to finding not just a job, but a work environment where you can truly thrive.

🙏🏽Thanks to Margaux Pelen Katharina Huke Fran Fischer Mira Christian Dijana Thellmann Paula Pastor Castaño @mistywaters Lucía Galán Cáceres for joining in and sharing your personal experiences. I took so much from it and can’t wait to apply all the learnings to my job search and child #2.

📩 𝗜𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘆𝗼𝘂, 𝗷𝗼𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁𝘀𝗔𝗽𝗽 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗽 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘆 𝘂𝗽𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝘂𝗽𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 - 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀.

What I Wish Someone Had Told Me Before Having Kids and working full-time 👼🏽

🛑 Yes to boundaries

Just because you need to leave at a certain time at work doesn't mean you're a low performer. At my first job after pregnancy, I felt guilty for being the first to leave and often made up for it by working late into the night.

Stop underselling yourself. Be upfront about your needs and boundaries.

🙋🏽‍♀️ Support over pride

When I founded my first company, I thought my partner and I had to do everything ourselves to save costs and maintain control. That was complete nonsense.

To thrive and stay mentally strong, get a support system as early as possible. Don’t be too proud to ask for help, whether it’s from other parents at daycare, coworkers, grandparents, or a nanny.

📋Divide and conquer

I'm a huge fan of tables and action items in my professional life. But I completely underestimated their power and necessity at home, especially when both parents are juggling careers and a family.

Sit down with your partner, note down action items and split them up. Be clear about what you can do and what you enjoy doing. Otherwise, you might fall into the mental load trap.
