History was made this week with the Refugee Olympic Team winning its first-ever Olympic medal since its creation over a decade ago.
Cindy Ngamb competed in the women’s 75kg boxing bracket throughout the games. Although she lost in the semifinals, she will leave Paris with a bronze medal, a first of its kind for this proud refugee team!
Since it’s inception, the team has tripled in size due to a record number of people being displaced from their homes due to conflict and violence. The United Nations refugee agency reported in June that nearly 120 million people were displaced worldwide in 2023.
With a world full of wars and political unrest, it is important to remember that it is people just like you and me that are ultimately affected. Refugee programs help get people to safety and give them the chance to start a new life….. or their Olympic journey!

A month into my exciting new job, I’m very aware that not all crisis are treated equal, especially in the press. We hear of the top 3-4 wars going on, but that only scratches the surface. In actuality, there are closer to 50 armed conflicts going on at the moment, according to the ACLED Conflict Index, and we’re barely hearing about them.
Imagine the millions of people whose lives are currently disrupted by all this hostility and fighting. It really puts things into perspective.
