"Conventional Wisdom is nothing other than a reference point" - Sam Zell

Reflecting upon the news of Sam's passing today and the limited but meaningful interactions I've had with I'm over the years, this was one of many many quotes that I truly appreciate.

I first had the opportunity to meet Sam Zell as a young banking analyst. In my new Jos A Bank suit (one of many that I spent my entire signing bonus on), I shuffled into a large conference room with many many other suits - but the man at the head of the table was definitely not in a suit - he wore motorcycle boots, jeans and a black leather biker jacket. There was no doubt who the lead dog was in that room - it was the unconventional guy.

Eight years ago I was given the opportunity to create and run an experiential learning program for acquisition entrepreneurs under the Kellogg Zell Fellows Program, which has become one of the more professionally and personally fulfilling experiences of my life. As a philanthropist, Sam invests in people instead of companies and the impact of the Zell Fellows program at Kellogg and beyond will certainly be part of his legacy. Thank you for your contributions to commerce, education and entrepreneurship.

"Unless you're the lead dog, the scenery never changes" - Sam Zell
