Free service journalism idea for newsrooms: Annotate the Project 2025 playbook, "Mandate for Leadership: The Conservative Promise."

It is 920 pages of text outlining the right wing's vision for fundamentally reshaping the role of the federal government, and it addresses everything from USAID to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

Most Americans have neither the time, attention span nor the understanding of civics to parse what it all means — but everyone should be able to understand it because it makes clear exactly what the consequences of a Trump victory in the 2024 U.S. presidential election will be, especially should the Republican Party win control of one or both chambers of Congress.

Editors, if your newsroom is focused on useless and minute updates about political campaigns and not focused on explaining what's at stake, you have your priorities wrong.

There’s long been something about Kara Swisher’s work that didn’t sit so well with me but I struggled to identify and articulate the nagging feeling. This piece does it perfectly while providing yet another example of why inert, access-based journalism is actually a massive disservice to audiences.
