CLEARWATER ROTARY CLUB CELEBRATES UNITED NATIONS DAY OF PEACE THROUGH ART
After the devastation of Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria it is nice to be able to report some positive news. On September 22, 2017 a group of high school students from Pinellas, Pasco, Hillsborough, Citrus and Hernando participated in activity to promote peace in the world. The high school students and exchange students spent their evening painting their impressions of peace on business windows across Clearwater Beach. To celebrate the United Nations International Day of Peace, the Rotary Club of Clearwater Beach sponsored a Painting for Peace Day. In 1982, the United Nations declared September 21 as a day to strengthen “the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples.” The theme for 2017 is “Together for Peace: Respect, Safety, and Dignity for All.” The theme highlights the ideal of togetherness. According to the United Nations website this is a global initiative to work together with “everyone forced to flee their homes and those leaving in search of a better life.” Rotary and the United Nations have a long history of working together. Rotary even has its own office in the United Nations building in New York.
