On the 30th Anniversary of the Violence Against Women Act, we’re proud to announce a set of voluntary Principles to Combat Image-Based Sexual Abuse released today by leading tech companies, civil society organizations, & academics in an effort led by the Center for Democracy & Technology, Cyber Civil Rights Initiative & The National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV).

AI and the power of social media are making it easier than ever to create and distribute nude or explicit images of people without their consent. Whether the images are real or fake, it has devastating effects. Companies have a central role to play in mitigating this abuse.

Today’s company signatories include Aylo, Bumble Inc., Hugging Face, Discord, Match Group, Meta, Microsoft and TikTok, with support from civil society leaders like Human Rights Campaign, LGBT Tech, Sexual Violence Prevention Association (SVPA), Free Speech Coalition, Dr Carolina Are, Renee DiResta, Elissa R. and more.

In a Working Group we launched with these and other major tech companies, advocacy groups, and trust & safety experts this summer, we’ll continue to share best practices and increase coordination across industry, civil society, and academia to combat image based sexual abuse.

Our work was celebrated today in a White House Fact Sheet marking this and other steps companies are taking. We’re thankful for the Administration’s leadership in this vital area.

I couldn’t be more grateful to work in partnership with Dr. Mary Anne Franks, Erica Olsen-Shaver and their respective teams at CCRI and NNEDV – experts who have been on the front lines combating IBSA for over a decade – as well as my dedicated CDT colleagues Kate Ruane, Becca Branum and Samir Jain.

If you’re part of a company or civil society organization whose work touches on these issues, you can sign up to join the Principles at IBSAPrinciples.org.

This week, Center for Democracy & Technology published new resources assessing the landscape for health privacy two years after #Dobbs. In that time, CDT has helped inform new state laws and federal regulatory protections, while leading our Dobbs Task Force which brought together leading tech companies, reproductive rights groups, health and privacy experts from around the country.

  • A new CDT issue brief reviews state “shield laws” in all 19 states where they’ve been enacted over the past two years, helping companies & providers understand this quickly changing landscape. https://lnkd.in/eZzZQdZv

  • A CDT blogpost from explains how the regulatory landscape for privacy has changed since Dobbs. https://lnkd.in/evX6szsc

  • My colleague Aliya Bhatia's op-ed in Tech Policy Press explores why the right to anonymity online shapes access to reproductive health information and care. https://lnkd.in/eucsW6ZA

  • Earlier this spring, CDT hosted the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)'s Office of Civil Rights head Melanie Fontes Rainer for a briefing on the new #HIPAA Privacy Rule which CDT and many others strongly support. https://lnkd.in/gysxazhg
