What's the impact of "Shrink" for top retailers? Shrink accounted for almost $100billion in losses for US businesses in 2022 (about $1.4% of sales) and £1billion in losses for UK merchants (70% of this in crime prevention spending, 30% direct losses).
Although not a new problem, 2022 has seen a significant spike in incidents.
- Retail theft has increased 27% across the ten largest cities in the UK YOY (and as much as 68% in some!)
- Incidents of violence against employees continues to grow. Many retailers are investing heavily in body cameras, additional security personnel or other protective measures in order to safeguard staff.
- Financial losses have more than doubled for retailers over the last 6-years.
While we can't ignore that increases have coincided with price of goods increases, a weaker economy and increased financial concerns for shoppers, there has been considerable growth in organized retail crime incidents (+26.5% in USA) and a rise of bizarre TikTok Challenge trends, which continue to pose a challenge for Retailers across multiple categories.
I had the pleasure of attending Collision Conf in Toronto this week, and what a fantastic event it has been! The lineup of speakers from various industries and topics provided a cutting edge yet in-depth learning opportunity. While it's no surprise that many sessions discussed the rapidly evolving field of AI, it was equally fascinating to hear about the emphasis on consumer interaction and experience as a driving force in tech innovation. It seems the rise of digitization is driving additional demand for authentic human experiences amidst the digital landscape. Pleased to have met many inspiring individuals, to have left with a brain full of valuable knowledge and most importantly, to have learnt about tons of game-changing start-ups revolutionizing our World. I can't wait to see how the future of tech continues to bend the limits of possibility!
