This weekend I had the wonderful opportunity to join a panel of incredible women at a Miami event put on by New Miami Girls led by Elen Boesing and moderated by Philippa Dods. I moved to this city after 25 years of my life in California excited by the growing momentum locally, and wanted to share here 3 things that I shared with the audience looking for data-driven motivation:

  1. You're in the right place: ⚡ 🌆 Miami's online microbusinesses (those with 10 or fewer employees) have grown 40% since pre-pandemic, and it is top 3 city in the country for small business concentration

  2. You have an outsized impact on your community: 📊 💼 every entrepreneur creates seven jobs (hiring directly, temporarily/suppliers, or just bringing money into the neighborhood) and drives down unemployment

  3. You're in good company: GoDaddy Venture Forward research found women are now 51% of online microbusiness owners and a fast-growing demographic. There's a huge community, and you are perfectly positioned to make it happen.

As not just a researcher/economist, but a recent small business owner with a physical location in our Miami neighborhood with my husband (Well Adjusted Chiropractic https://lnkd.in/evUdER64), I find a lot of comfort and strength in these data points, but also now face a lot of the challenges I used to only talk about -- I live them firsthand. And that is good news, 😊 because I'm more inspired and connected than ever to help others on this journey navigate getting online and technical assistance, marketing help and strategy, and access to capital.

Honored to share the stage and learn from these women yesterday: Nicole Vasquez, CEO of MBD Partners, Gretchen Rodríguez - Head of Product at TD Bank, and Madelyn Reyes - Software Engineer at Pinterest

Excited to share this piece with the inspiring Tammy Thompson about Pittsburgh: one of the fastest-growing areas for America’s smallest businesses, called microbusinesses - with almost 150,000 of them calling it home.

A digital presence continues to be a key asset for modern business owners to expand their customer base. GoDaddy Venture Forward research finds 25% of microbusiness entrepreneurs use their website for sales and 19% for bookings.

That number is more than 50% higher for Black entrepreneurs and about 20% higher for women-owned businesses. Black-owned and women-owned businesses are also more likely to have nationwide customers.

Huge shout out to Pam Lewis and the Hillman Foundation for all you do and for connecting us!
