Ransomware isn't just a buzzword—it's a serious threat that can paralyze your entire operation overnight. As CEO of BlueSteel Cybersecurity, I've seen firsthand how destructive these attacks can be, particularly when they encrypt key infrastructure like Active Directory or critical databases. Imagine coming into work only to find you can’t access any of your systems or data. That’s not just a bad day; that’s a catastrophic operational pause!

Why does this keep happening? Often, it’s as simple as a clicked link. Yes, phishing remains the number one entry point for these attacks, preying on human error and the ever-so-slight lapse in judgment. And let's not overlook the gaps left by unpatched systems—a close second in vulnerability exploitation.

So, what's the best way to shield ourselves from these threats? If I could pick just one solution to hit the market, it would be one that prevents the encryption of our databases and essential systems. This would be a game-changer, maintaining the lifeblood of our operations and keeping us online no matter the threats we face.

Let's pivot to proactive measures. Regular encrypted backups, network segmentation, and rigorous employee training form the triad of essential defenses. Integrating AI-driven anomaly detection and adopting a zero-trust architecture can further fortify our defenses, turning our networks into fortresses that preemptively neutralize threats.

Every day, we have a choice: fortify our defenses, or leave the door open to disaster. At BlueSteel, we choose security. What about you? Let's discuss more on how we can safeguard our digital landscapes.

What is an appropriate passing score on Security Awareness Training Exams? 🏫

Is a 70% passing score acceptable? 80% ? 90%?

One could argue that it depends on various factor like course complexity, the test's difficulty, and other factors.

You could also say, "Who cares?" 😂 Here's why you should care...

Why are security training test results so important? Your security program's success is largely dependent on your staff's security education.

Simply put, if you have a staff that does not understand what Malware looks like or is being phished, the odds of an incident or, worse, a breach increase dramatically.

This will have repercussions when it comes time for security compliance assessments (SOC2, ISO 27001, CMMC, etc.) and effects on cyber insurance rates. That's not fun to deal with.

Here's what I've learned from other organizations who have successfully handled lower-than-expected security awareness training test scores:

1️⃣ Have a talk with the people who received low test scores. This will assist determine the cause. Is it a linguistic barrier (more prevalent than you realize)? Is it the content that is not engaging?

2️⃣ Provide alternate courses on the same subject. Most prominent security awareness training platforms have extensive material libraries that offer a variety of possibilities. The one BlueSteel Cybersecurity utilizes also offers a variety of format options (cartoons, comedies, etc.), which can enhance the experience.

3️⃣ Convert a negative to a positive. Implementing security in a culture that did not have it all to begin with is challenging enough; adding a layer of negativity to a low test result will not improve the problem. Organizing a competition with awards for individuals who increase their scores or help others improve their scores fosters teamwork while achieving security education objectives.

There is no perfect solution, and each organizational culture is unique.

If your firm is adopting a security training program, what are your thoughts about lower exam scores, and what have you done to help improve them?
