Alina Kunitskaya

PhD Candidate in Biomedical Engineering at the University of British Columbia with an interest in space exploration; EIT

Alina Kunitskaya is a highly accomplished individual with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering with a biomedical engineering specialization from the University of Calgary and is currently pursuing a PhD in biomedical engineering at the University of British Columbia.

Her passion for biotechnology led her to complete a 12-month internship at BioMarin Pharmaceutical, a California-based biotechnology company focusing on therapeutics for rare genetic diseases.

Alina is deeply interested in space exploration and has contributed significantly to life sciences research in space, biological processes for space applications, and life support systems.

She has actively engaged in projects related to space technology, including leading a team in developing a process to produce bioplastics from solid human waste for 3D printing tools on Mars, and presenting an oxygen production process for Mars at the International Astronautical Congress 2019.

As a dedicated team player, Alina has a track record of excelling in the biotechnology industry, space-related research, and biomedical engineering research.

She is committed to inspiring youth to pursue careers in engineering and science through volunteering and collaborating with outreach programs and organizations.

Her contributions to student-led research projects and her involvement in the University of Calgary community were recognized during the convocation address by the University of Calgary President in 2018.
