Sometimes, less is more when you're job searching. I spoke to several people this week who got jobs the old-fashioned way. They didn't mass apply to hundreds of jobs at one time, hire someone to rewrite their LinkedIn profile, or pay someone to tell them how they could make $100,000 more a year.

Here's what they did instead:

✅ Strategized what type of jobs to apply for, using CareerOneStop's Skills Matcher and LinkedIn's Career Explorer to match their skills to jobs. https://lnkd.in/e8SnwxG9 https://lnkd.in/efvgk26D

✅ Talked to everyone they knew to let them know they were job hunting and wrote an Open to Work post on LinkedIn (don't do either if you are currently employed though!). https://lnkd.in/eZTmQyTv

✅ Skipped most job sites and used Google and LinkedIn to search for positions that were a match and had been recently listed, using filters such as date listed, type of position, experience level, remote, etc., to find the most relevant jobs. When they added job sites to the mix, they focused on using the best sites for their job search. https://lnkd.in/eNV3JXSS

✅ Before they applied, checked the company website to make sure the job opening was legitimate and not a scam and the company was actually hiring for the role. Then they applied directly on the company website. Tip: Follow Mark Anthony Dyson for lots of good advice on how to avoid getting scammed.

✅Used Teal's Resume Builder and Cover Letter Generator to tailor their resume and letters so employers could see they were a match, and used the Job Tracker to organize and manage their job search. The basic version is free. https://www.tealhq.com/

✅ Checked LinkedIn for connections at the company who could provide a referral, advice, and insight into the job and employer.

✅ Practiced interviewing with these free tools to make sure they would make the best impression. https://lnkd.in/enesQimE

✅ Sent a thank-you note following up after the interview. https://lnkd.in/e3KsyTxw

✅ In some circumstances, or course, it's not so simple or straightforward. If basic job searching isn't working for you, here's how to find a career coach from Dr. Kyle Elliott, MPA, CHES and what to know before you hire a resume writer from LinkedIn's Andrew Seaman. https://lnkd.in/eTqRhMbb https://lnkd.in/expjUn7T #jobsearch #careers

Bodi (the Icelandic Sheepdog) thought you might enjoy his smile. He’s always happy and ready for fun - and thinks it’s always a good idea to take a break from work or job hunting to go on as many adventures as you can 😊
