#librarians are very concerned with assessing the #veracity of information.

Right now, everyone in Australia needs to become somewhat skilled, or at very least, a bit savvy, in assessing the veracity of information around the upcoming #referendum on the #voicetoparliament.

There's so many claims out there which are at very least dubious & at worst, are outright lies.

Whatever your views & however you intend to vote in the referendum, please stop & consider when you see information supporting either side of the debate:

-Who is saying this & why might they be saying this? If you cannot find out who is saying something (i.e. there's no attribution or someone isn't telling you anything about themselves), immediately disregard their contribution.

-Who is giving this person a platform for their views and why?

-Is the person an expert in the topic they're talking about? Politicians generally are not.

-Do they cite authoritative sources for their claims? If not, either disregard or check the claims for yourself (from a reputable source).

-Is what they're saying backed up by multiple, reputable sources which are independent of one another (so, for example, multiple newspapers all owned by an infamous newspaper proprietor don't count as multiple sources).

Whatever you do, don't believe someone just because they're well known.

Be aware there's no legal requirement for politicians & others to stick to the truth in this campaign.
