Alison Friedman

Alison M. Friedman is an internationally recognized performing arts executive and producer with extensive experience in cultural exchange and arts management. She served as the Artistic Director for Performing Arts at the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority in Hong Kong from late 2017 to 2021.12 In this role, she led the dance, theater, music, and Chinese opera teams at Xiqu Centre and Freespace, overseeing program planning and all aspects of production.1

Prior to her work in Hong Kong, Friedman founded and directed Ping Pong Productions, a Beijing-based non-profit organization that facilitated cultural exchanges through performing arts across five continents.3 Her career has focused on using the arts to build bridges between cultures and showcase shared humanity.2

Friedman's accomplishments include:

  1. Launching an annual indoor-outdoor jazz festival in Hong Kong
  2. Developing programs for underserved elderly populations
  3. Spearheading Hong Kong's first digital programming in response to COVID-19 theater closures1

In October 2021, Friedman became the Executive and Artistic Director for Carolina Performing Arts at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.12 She holds a magna cum laude degree from Brown University, is a former Fulbright Fellowship recipient, and completed an arts management fellowship at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.13
