Alistair Gunn

Head, Department of Physiology, University of Auckland

Alistair Gunn is an academic and clinical Professor in the Department of Physiology at Auckland University.1 He completed his medical degree at Otago University, New Zealand, in December 1982 and later trained in pediatric endocrinology.1 In 1997, Alistair was appointed as a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Auckland.1 He is also the Head of the Department of Physiology at the University of Auckland.23

Gunn is recognized for his contributions to understanding and advancing neuroprotection for newborns.1 His research has significantly impacted the preclinical development of therapeutic hypothermia (HT) as a treatment for hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) and the development of international clinical neuroprotection trials.1 In the late 1990s, Alistair was pivotal in developing the understanding and current practice of HT.1

Alistair's work includes defining the window of opportunity for HT treatment, emphasizing the importance of starting within the "latent" phase, and determining the optimal cooling duration to be 72 hours.1 He played a lead role in the CoolCap Study.1 Alistair has written over 800 publications and is a regular speaker at international neuroscience meetings.1 The Newborn Brain Society honored Alistair with the NBS Honorary Fellow Award in recognition of his contributions to neonatal neuroprotection.1
