~~ HOPES FOR "THE RELIGION BUSINESS" DOC ~~

The power and danger of documentaries is that they make truth claims.

As such, it's crucially important for the film producers to treat each person directly and indirectly addressed and impacted by their documentary with "the awe and circumspection due them" (CS Lewis, The Weight of Glory).

They rarely do.

I hope that the team producing "The Religion Business" documentary series will do better than most.

From PR News Wire:

"'The Religion Business,' produced by Corban Productions, delves deep into the often-taboo subject of accountability within religious organizations. The documentary explores allegations of misconduct, financial impropriety, and cover-ups that have plagued various religious denominations. The show features interviews with former clergy members, whistleblowers, and survivors who share their personal experiences and insights into the systemic issues within religious institutions while exploring the balance of separation of church and state and tax exemption. From these stories, overarching questions emerge. If there was more accountability within religion, could religious organizations change the world for the better? How many sick could be healed, how many hungry could be fed, how many unjust deaths could be prevented?"

"Often taboo subject of accountability"?? The Christian nonprofits I've worked in and with have talked about this endlessly and are constantly concerned about being demonstrably "above reproach".

But, as with any area of life, America's religious institutions must surely possess a bell curve of propriety. Doubtless, there are some institutions who can rightly come in for criticism for financial malfeasance, nepotism, extravagance and much else.

Here's hoping "The Religion Business" keeps its sights trained solely on such offenders.

And here's hoping that this film in some way provides a moment of appreciation for the good people at the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability (ECFA) who have long helped member organizations stay within the boundaries of good stewardship. 🙌

~~ THE BIGGEST MOVES ARE BEYOND PREDICTION ~~

When Donna Lucas and I were planning our Outcomes 2024 talk about Responsibly Fearless marketing, she told me "You HAVE to watch 'Air'; it's perfect for our talk."

She was right. I watched it on a plane and emailed her all my favorite scenes.

This moment where Nike CEO Phil Knight is chewing out Sonny Vaccaro for wanting to roll the dice on Michael Jordan was among those scenes.

"We want thoughtful, careful, knowable outcomes!"

Boy, haven't we all heard that an awful lot, especially in the #nonprofit space?

There's nothing wrong with that desire of course. Predictability can be important. It's when we limit ourselves to only such strategies that we basically ensure low growth and, eventually, a decline.

MAF's Tracey Werre and I also mentioned this scene in our talk at Bridge Conference's Faith & Fundraising Day a couple weeks back.

Despite Tracey's laudably transparent humility about the various higher-risk marketing innovations she's led at MAF, it was interesting for me to experience - during casual conversation afterward - people talking with awe about what they'd seen in the MAF examples.

That's what happens when we are courageous enough to try the big, new, game-changing strategies.

It's not that we're not afraid. It's that we learn to overcome our fears. Through #ResponsibleFearlessness, #DiscerningCreativity and #HumanCenteredEverything.

PS - Yes, I know it's very odd to see Matt Damon and Ben Affleck in a movie together. Also: Something something #DunKings...
