We are so fortunate in the PNW to have natural spaces that root us in what is important and help us stay curious. This fall has been an amazing mushroom season near our house, so I've been taking my kids out for hikes to observe and ID this very important member of our forests. And, I LOVE taking pictures, so I thought it would be interesting to share the pics, our observations, and a little knowledge on these fascinating fungi...and maybe inspire you to get out and appreciate what we need to steward.

Please note that I am not a mycologist but learn a lot from those who have made this field of study their career...and I never eat what I find. While I love how they look and what they do for us, I leave the edible identification to the experts.

First up is this beauty - aptly named Crowded Parchment. Like many fungi, they help break down trees and create a biodiverse habitat. It is pretty common across North America, and can vary in color from yellow to cinnamon to brown.

Fun fact: this mushroom has a specific appetite - it is a "bracket" fungi that prefers oak over most other types of trees. www.driftlessprairies.org has a nice summary of Crowded Parchment alongside many other conservationists' and mycologists' sites.

Hope you enjoyed this bit of nature today! #climateaction #biodiversity #cleantech #sustainability #inittogether

Reduce, reuse, repurpose...these are words (and actions) my parents lived as we grew up. They've been a cornerstone for myself and my family. I'm happy to say that I'm expanding the impact of this concept from being a personal commitment, to being a professional one.

What does this mean? In short, I'm repurposing my experience in enterprise tech, to climate and sustainability. I'm grateful that I have the time to build my skills via certificate courses in circular economy/business models, sustainable goals development and global policy development...to start :). I'm doing some pro-bono advisory in the carbon sequestration and storage space...and getting to meet talented professionals with a passion to sustainably grow our economy as we improve our communities and environment.

Why now? I've been thinking about this for a while now...and when one door closes, I always open the next. This time I'm opening and walking through a door I have cared about my entire life.

What's next? Learn, connect, advise, and then narrow the aperture to find my next role. Climate and sustainability are vast spaces, with so many interesting challenges. Energy, agriculture, manufacturing, decarbonization, electrification, climate tech, community/policy...that's just a sniff of the areas to hone in on.

This may just sound alike another post from another tech person who is rethinking their career...you're right! Seems a lot of us are going through a metamorphosis of sorts...if we're going to spend our precious time and energy, why not spend it on something that we care about...and better yet, something that can help our families and communities. Great article this week from The New York Times on the phenomena: https://lnkd.in/gjy_8Ssb

I wouldn't have had this opportunity without the help along the way from amazing mentors and sherpas: Chris Benham, Jason Conyard, Shari McLaren, John Stuckey, Malia Fazzio, Michel Feaster, Jason Demeny, Dave Wilt, Chris Pick, Christy Marble, Kammie Flitton, Greg L., Wei Gao, Noel Adams, Kerry Brown and my Dad - Tony Armstrong. Thank you to everyone who continues to support this journey!
