Highlights
Why does this picture mean so much to me? My 4 year old daughter, Tatum, was the only one who picked vanilla.
As a young kid it was so important to me to fit in. Some of that probably had to do with the content I consumed at the time - 80s and 90s movies like Clueless, Can’t Buy Me Love, Mean Girls, where the outsiders got makeovers from the popular kids and boom fit right in. I never wanted to be the outsider. I loved being surrounded by friends with the same background, interests and tastes in music, clothes whatever. As I grew up, moved out on my own and experienced life in big cities like SF and NYC, I met so many different people. People whose background, experience, personality and tastes were very different than mine. And I’ve never felt so free. Being surrounded by these differences has given me the courage to be my true self and to pursue a path I never envisioned as a kid- my well rounded career, loads of international travel, marrying and becoming a mom later in life.
This pic tells me that my 4 year old is not afraid to be different, to stand out. And while this was one simple exercise in a small and supportive setting, I know that at this moment in time she has the confidence to be her own person. My goal now is to help her keep it. And introduce her to all sorts of people, places, things and, obviously, ice cream flavors.
