As Winston Churchill said, “those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” The article rightly brings up Kozmo, but I would also add Webvan as grocery ecommerce companies that scaled aggressively before developing a path to a profitable business model. Sadly, since those crashes were more than two decades ago, people seem to have forgotten them.
Unfortunately, the layoffs at Gopuff (and other ultrafast delivery companies) show no signs of slowing down. These challenges will also make it much more difficult and costly for venture-backed food companies to raise money in the coming years.
