Highlights
I'm grateful to @writersdigest for the opportunity to write about how we're "Making Our Immigrant Ancestors Proud Through Writing". My latest book "Gloriana Presente A First Day of School Story" illustrated by @dorisrodg showcases the anxiety that kids feel on the first day of school, especially if they are English Language Learners like I was. As the daughter and granddaughter of immigrants I faced early education language barriers, but I learned to find my voice and overcome my fear. Now as an author I get to empower the next generation of young readers to do the same. . Hello 👋🏾 The news is out!!! This year I brought Gloriana Presente into the world in both English and Spanish. This is my heart book about a little girl that is nervous about going to school because she doesn't speak English. This was my experience as an English Language Learner.
But that's not all. This year #2 is my number because we're expecting identical twin girls this September. I kept my pregnancy a secret because it was a high risk pregnancy carrying twins that share the same placenta.
Plus I have hyperemesis gravidarum (HG), which means I've been throwing up 2-10 times every day for my entire pregnancy. Morning sickness doesn't compare to the rare condition of HG, which affects 3% of pregnant individuals.
I also have gestational diabetes because of the extra hormones of carrying twins so I have to check my sugars 4X a day and be super mindful about what I eat. Did you know that 5-9% of pregnancies suffer from gestational diabetes? And that some individuals end up having it for life after delivery?
Plus I'm at risk of developing preeclampsia because I had it during my first pregnancy. It's been a lot dealing with these health issues while still being a mom, working, being an author, and community organizer. I apologize in advance if I haven't been as responsive as I usually am because I have a lot on my plate.
Fortunately, I'm happy to report the twins are growing and healthy. I will be taking unpaid maternity leave in September and October, because our country hasn't passed legislation for paid parental leave. Please vote for legislation that actually helps families and kids, and let's connect in Nov or Dec. . #identicaltwins #twinmom #hyperemesisgravidarum #gestationaldiabetes #preeclampsia #highriskpregnancy #govote #vote
