Highlights
This week, Antonym turned five (!) years old.
My two deepest, lifelong loves are singing and writing. One powered by the voice, and the other, words. For years, I vacillated between the two disciplines, trying to land on the perfect balance in which both could charge my life. Antonym is the collision of those loves, an organic marriage of writing and voice.
It is meaningful beyond measure to get to play in those territories every day with people I adore for clients who believe in the necessity of excellent, human-generated writing expressed distinctly through resonant tonality.
Businesses, teams, companies, leadership, writing—none of it happens in a vacuum. Five-year-old Antonym is here because hundreds of people have believed in our work, contributed their wordsmithing, finessed our operations, and championed our growth. Over and over and over again.
Words are just the coolest.
To five! To words. 🖤
Last night, I attended the CEW event, "What Today’s Gen Z Consumer Wants from Beauty." I've been looking forward to this event since it was announced because Gen Z is attuned to messaging in a way that's invigorating and challenging and demands truth and integrity. They do not suffer fools.
It's easy and lazy for generations to dismiss each other. To discount the way they see the world, or haze them for being outmoded. Curiosity keeps us connected. It's a powerful driver of empathy and is essential for maintaining emotional and cultural relevancy. My team at Antonym and I are particularly thrilled about the challenge of revitalizing our writing and strategy to connect with a new generation—the curiosity that requires this shift, and the evolution we'll experience as a result.
Some key takeaways from last night's event: 💥 When it comes to messaging, Gen Z expects that you include them in the conversation, are transparent, offer products with value (and value doesn't just mean price), and deliver on trends. 💥 1 in 5 Gen Z feel that Chat GPT has stifled their creative thinking ( 🙌 🙌 🙌 ). 💥 60% won't shop brands that don't have a mission. 💥 They are not brand loyal; they are product loyal and are looking for their holy grail. 💥 When it comes to brand content, they see through the facade of content for content's sake, and are looking for gold amongst the endless clutter. 💥 Efficacy is everything. They are not won over by outdated luxury codes and do not assume a product is efficacious because it's expensive. 💥 Millennials pay attention to price point and channel. Gen Z pays attention to who's using it and talking about it. 💥 Gen Z expects brands to be plugged into trends and cultural events as they are happening. 💥 Gen Z desires responsive content, which cannot be planned. Brands have to be agile enough to listen to their audience and then respond to them through content. "You must resist the urge to control every pixel between you and the end user." 💥 The absolute table stakes for compelling content? Being direct, personal, real, and not selling to them.
If you haven't flexed your messaging strategy to address the above, Antonym is here to help. Agility and flexibility are non-negotiable. Communication is only going to move faster and faster, driven by digitally native generations who are sharp, savvy, and deeply discerning.
