Highlights
Always a treat to be back on the SMU Campus talking about the benefits of improv in all areas of life. And I’m excited to pop in as a guest lecturer this semester.
YES I said I was finished with school AND I guess its ok to change your mind! 😎
The Case for a Professional Nap: Yesterday was the 4th anniversary of closing my business. I obviously didn’t make that decision on a whim, and I could count on one hand how many people knew that announcement was about to hit their social feeds. I was a mixed bag of emotions. The support from my friends, family, students, staff, performers, and Whisky the Dog™ was incredible. It was the end of an era, and it had been a really good era.
The number one thing people repeated on social media, in phone calls, and text messages: I CAN’T WAIT TO SEE WHAT YOU’LL DO NEXT!
Well that made two of us. YES, I also couldn’t wait to see what I would do next AND I had no idea what next was going to be. I had given the “next” a little bit of thought during the wind down process of the business, though not with the amount of focus I should have, given the amount of people who were "waiting to see what I did next."
I carried that message with me for months. Years, really. I thought everyone was expecting something big. Something GRAND. It turns out, they weren’t. YES, I believe they said those words because they meant it AND I now know they weren’t sitting around waiting for me to announce something big or GRAND. It was a way to show support and encouragement from past achievements and then they all went about their day, weeks, and lives.
I saw Simone Biles respond to people asking what she was going to do after she won ALL THE GOLDS (What a GOAT!) and she said “Y’all really need to stop asking Olympic athletes what they’re going to do next.” I felt that. Not because I’m an Olympic athlete. In fact I might have tennis elbow after one lesson of pickleball last week. I felt it because sometimes you need to enjoy the moment, or grieve it, or both. Planning what’s next isn’t always what’s next on our minds.
Sometimes the expectations we put on ourselves could be coming from what others expect of us, rather than what we expect, and more importantly, what we need. What did I need after almost 12 years? A professional nap. I spent several weeks resting and recouping before I dove into grad school and real estate.
Just because someone has achieved something cool in the past doesn’t mean they are ready to dive headfirst into the next cool thing. Sometimes people just need a professional nap. And when they wake up, they may do something great. They may just live their life a little. And these are both perfectly amazing choices because it’s their choice. Either way, I encourage you to think about how you lift people up when they’re at the peak of the mountain or the depths of the valley because you never know what kind of nap they might need.
Whenever we would upgrade locations at DCH, I had a tradition of taking a selfie in every room of the building on the last day before we closed up shop. I never posted the pics I took the day before we closed in 2020, so here I am, 4 years ago, taking a selfie in the men’s restroom. 😎
