Great short read on the power of simple storytelling (via analogy) to give context to numbers – the kind that sticks in consumers’ minds. In an age where we’re all about the data, it’s a good reminder for all communicators to make that data as human as possible:

COLOUR ME SOUTHERN CHARMED

Winston Churchill once said: “The most beautiful voice in the world is that of an educated southern woman.” I just spent two days steeped in the honey-and-sweet-tea soaked tones of seven such women—all of them cancer survivors.

My soul sister Jolanda K. Harris invited me to Huntsville, Alabama as a guest coach for the latest instalment of her LivOn Journey Camp, a haven for survivors to connect and create community as they engage in spirit-lifting activities that spur self-discovery and personal growth. Jolanda operates these camps several times a year through the non-profit organization she—a cancer survivor and fellow cancer coach—founded to fill a gap in the system.

I led a workshop I designed, aimed at helping survivors meet and explore their pre-cancer and during-cancer selves with love, empathy, forgiveness, and gratitude, laying those past selves to rest so they can fully embrace the formidable women they have become post-cancer.

Over two soul-filling days, I listened with rapt attention as they wove a technicolour tapestry of shared stories, emotions, experiences, and faith—with the phrase “sister speaks for me” a common refrain.

I watched them show up with love, vulnerability, and authenticity.

I laughed until my cheeks hurt at the silver-tongued humour that is the trademark of southern women.

I saw them support one another in moments of raw emotion, the same clogging my own throat.

I stood witness as they formed a sisterhood and felt the love and understanding in the bond between them.

I came here to co-lead and facilitate and I leave a student in awe of her teachers.

Richer in stories and memories.

Charmed, touched, and transformed by the Sisterhood of the Snow Angels.
