Highlights
How quickly can you spot bot-generated content?
I bet within 5-10 seconds, the time it takes to read the first few lines of text.
Despite its skill in parsing data and summarizing lots of text, AI remains pretty terrible at creating a realistic voice and tone (no one uses phrases like "the content marketing abyss" -- something I actually read this week in content that was supposedly authored in first person).
Whether you use AI to help with your first draft or your last, the risk is that your own voice and tone—as a brand, as an individual—will start to suffer as you unintentionally start to produce generic, lukewarm phrasing that frankly feels produced by a machine. Publish it, and its actually going to work against you.*
If you as a marketer or business owner want to make an authentic human connections—the kind that inspires people feel intrinsically connected with your brand, and make decisions because of those connections—you'll need to dig deep and figure out what makes your voice and tone distinctively YOURS. And you'll need to infuse it into your content every. single. time.
If this feels tricky...that's because it is! Our voice and tone is a unique fingerprint for who we are, and its tough to articulate that personality—particularly if you're trying to do it across an organization.
But its something I personally love to do! I wanted to put together a few ideas on how to take the amorphous concept of "finding your voice and tone" and put into a guide than can help you get started.

In a few weeks, I'll be publishing a companion piece on how to create content that doesn't sound like AI. I'd LOVE to hear about and potentially include any example of things you've read which are clearly AI generated. Those are always fun to discuss! Feel free to DM or share below.
*Early accounts are showing that sites that rely heavily on AI produced content are starting to plummet in organic search. Plus, any reader or potentially customer can see what you're doing. You'd be better off optimizing the real human content that you already have than "AI stuffing" new articles that lack humanity and real world insight.

I've been waiting for this moment (for what feels like) forever...and its finally here!! 🎉
So thrilled to announce that Masthead Media (now Masthead) has undergone a makeover! From our revamped logo to our expanded website design at www.mastheadmedia.com, we're sharing our brand new identity with you.
While Masthead's DNA is—and always will be—rooted in editorial-style storytelling and audience-first thinking, the changes to our branding, look, voice and services reflect the changing nature of content and how we all connect with one another through it. Twelve years in, I've never been prouder of what we've created or more excited for all of the possibilities to come.
Credit for our brand transformation goes to the amazing team at Masthead , including my co-founder Julie Hochheiser Ilkovich, Alara Yildizlar, Katie Kelly, Jamie Wiebe and motion graphics guru Bill Schoenberg, plus the teams at Week of the Website and Made Better Brands. Special thanks also to Caila Ball-Dionne, Karinna Trapanotto, Samantha Cataldo and Lindsay Malzone for all the insights that have made our brand, voice, tone and website come to life in a whole new way. We are so grateful to you all!
