💡 The long game ... and why it matters.

🔦 I've been thinking a lot about the long game this week. The quote "it's a marathon not a sprint" has been in my head. For others who are entrepreneurs, you know what I mean! The short term is so volatile that it sometimes messes with your head. And makes you wonder if you can keep going. But that long term mission, vision, passion is actually what matters.

1️⃣ The long game matters in investing: Warren Buffett's quotes are the best in this regard: "Time is the friend of the wonderful company, the enemy of the mediocre." "Only buy something that you'd be perfectly happy to hold if the market shut down for 10 years." “An investor should act as though he had a lifetime decision card with just twenty punches on it."

2️⃣ The long game matters in human interactions: This is a big one! I've had more than one or two situations in my life where a short term decision against me has had a devastating impact (in the short term.) But if we hold firm to what we know to be right, if we continue to pursue the pathway we intended to walk, and if we are lucky enough to have the best of husbands, partners, friends and family, then that short term scenario ceases to bother us.

3️⃣ The long game matters in how you think about money: My father taught me to budget at age 14 when I got my first paper round. One of the keys to budgeting is not how much you will spend, but how much you save. It matters not the amount, it matters the long term appreciation of saving for a rainy day. I did not come from a privileged background financially, so this discipline is even more critical. My savings today enable me to think long term, and I'm so grateful that I started early!

4️⃣ The long game matters in relationships: The older I get, the more I appreciate those whom I have known for a long time. Longevity in relationships creates perspective. It enables you to learn how to say you're sorry and how to forgive. It helps you realize that differences (of all sorts - including political!) can be overcome.

I have run one Marathon (NYC 2007) and walked one Marathon (London 2009.) Both taught me useful lessons. Training, consistency and mindset matter over physical skill, and going the distance with those you care about helps you finish the race.
