Although it is one of America's oldest holidays, its new status as a Federal Holiday apparently leaves many citizens wondering who Juneteenth is "for". As an #innovation #ai leader and advocate of inclusive #collectiveintelligence, I found pragmatic inspiration in this recent book by David Moinina Sengeh, CINO of Sierra Leone: Radical Inclusion: Seven Simple Steps to Create a More Just Workplace, Home and World. In a recent McKinsey & Company Author Talks article titled "It's not about me, is it?" he provides this powerful insight that gets to the heart of our need for collective engagement and the end of that-issue-is-not-about-me thinking. "If you think [about exclusion based on race, gender, identity or disability, like this], “It’s not about me; it’s about other people.” [or it's] "only about you", it means that the ways and the tools with which we solve the problem are limited. This also means that the solution does not include everybody. The fundamental truth—and there’s research to this—is that inclusion is better for everyone." The economic value of inclusion is proven in author, Michigan professor and CrowdSmart advisor Scott Page's diversity theorem, 'when the diversity of a group is large, the error of the crowd is small.'
Juneteenth is an opportunity for all of us to recommit to personal daily actions that move the world forward in a mindset of radical inclusion. It's not only the morally right thing to do, it's the economically smart thing to do. I'm honored to be associated with radically inclusive entrepreneurs, leaders, companies and investment funds who move us forward together.
