Happy to have my talk streamed later today as a part of the ongoing #HashiTalks Deploy virtual event: https://hashi.co/deploy
I show how modern mesh-based microservice architectures may already have the core primitives needed to build a cost-effective system that provides backend developers with reasonable isolation to preview their code changes quickly & conveniently. I also do a short demo of such a DX.
If you are a part of the Developer Platform/Experience/Productivity team in your org or are simply interested in this topic, do register & attend the free session. See you there!
I hope that young software engineers joining the workforce may be told these things:
• Be pragmatic: Don’t be easily swayed by technology trends. Always be conscious of trade-offs while making decisions. Don't abstract early. Don’t over-engineer. Problem solving is heavily contextual and cannot happen in a vacuum. Unlike school, the goal is not to implement the ‘ideal’ solution every time. Few organisations have the time, the need or the budget for that. The North star must always be to build secure, reliable, maintainable software given constraints.
• Be inclusive: Learn to acknowledge, accommodate and appreciate diversity of backgrounds and ideas.
• Be empathetic: Learn to empathise with the person who will be maintaining your code; the user who is using your software; the person who is operating your software in a live environment; the colleague who is just starting out; the colleague who needs to comprehend and act on your code review or IRC message. If you think that you can do a little extra to make their lives easier, do it.
• Be prepared: In the course of your career in a conventional corporate set-up, you will likely meet every character and find yourself in every situation that you have already seen on Dilbert, Office Space and The Office.
