Highlights
I had the honor of moderating the session on Emerging Technologies in the Drone Ecosystem at the Confederation of Indian Industry National Conference on Drones at the India Habitat Centre in New Delhi.
I was delighted to lead a conversation on the progress and obstacles in the drone industry, with the goal of making India the global hub of drone technology by 2030.
We were fortunate to have Mr. Manpreet Singh Bhatia, CEO of the FORE Institute of Drone Technology and Research (FIDTR), as one of our esteemed speakers. His insights and expertise contributed to an enriching conversation about the future of drone technology and innovation.
Thank you to everyone who joined us for this session. Your participation and engagement made the event a success. Looking forward to continuing our journey towards a brighter future in drone technology!

Sincere thanks to Shri Vumlunmang Vulanam and Shri Piyush Srivastava for sparing their valuable time and inaugurating the National Drone Conference on 16th April 2024 organized by Confederation of Indian Industry.
I had the opportunity to moderate the session on financing options for the Drone Industry. The panelist included Apurva Chamaria - Head of Startups & Venture Capital Google India, Girish Shivani - Executive Director and Fund Manager YourNest Venture Capital, Suneet Shukla - Chief Financial Officer, IFCI LIMITED, Ankit H.- Chief Investment Officer, MountTech Growth Fund - Kavachh.
A recurring theme was that though the vision is for India to be Drone Capital with a projected $13 Bn market opportunity in 2030, the current trajectory is significantly short. The financing requirements are largely from Micro SME's. A key challenge voiced by the investor community was that the start ups were largely focused on assembly operations with limited value addition leading to low differentiation. This may explain why the total financing in the Drone sector has been a paltry $83 Mn from January 2016 to November 2023. The space industry which is a more complex and niche opportunity has raised many multiples of the investment in the Drone sector.
There is unanimity that the potential for Drones is across a wide variety of use cases. The growth of this industry has the potential to mimic the transformational telecom growth story, improving the life of every citizen and nation building. As Shri Vualnam commented, the heart of this industry is about batteries. This would lead to a lot of synergies with electric craft manufacturing/electric ground mobility. enabling higher scale.
Given the strategic importance of this industry and the fact that India will be the largest consumer market, we will need to think differently in unlocking the barriers. Scaling up this business will need serious capital - Institutional funds, venture debt, NBFCs in addition to VC's especially as the industry commences manufacturing operations.
