During my school days, our history teacher would often say, 'The best thing we should learn from history is that no one learns from history.' So true! In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the world experienced an unprecedented disruption. Businesses, large and small, faced tremendous challenges, and lessons were learned the hard way. However, as time passes and we gradually return to normalcy, it appears that many of us are all too eager to forget the harsh realities of the pandemic and abandon the valuable lessons it imparted. When was the last time you properly tested your business continuity plans? Things like infrastructural readiness we thought would become part of our daily life, the disaster recovery plans that would be seriously looked upon as part of the BAU playbook, what happened to that? During the lockdown days, companies were forced to embrace technology and innovation as they navigated the turbulent waters of a global crisis. Flexibility and resilience became buzzwords, and many businesses vowed to prioritize employee well-being and sustainability moving forward. Yet, as the pandemic's grip weakens and economic activity resumes, some are acting as if COVID-19 never happened. Here's how: One of the most powerful lessons was remote work, as the term WFH entered our dictionary. Despite almost 100% remote work, employee productivity went up, as did customer satisfaction. Yet, as the world moved back towards normalcy, we seem to have forgotten most of these. WFH is replaced by RTO (return-to-office), with little regard for what employees want. Employee well-being is in the backburner as corporates are issuing RTO ultimatums, forgetting the tremendous positive impact of hybrid working on employee morale. Cost-efficiency, improved work-life-balance, reduced carbon footprint, all these advantages that were highlighted as advantages of WFH seem to have been forgotten. Employee well-being was brought to the forefront during the pandemic. Flexible hours and mental health support were prioritized. Now, many businesses are reducing these offerings as if the well-being of their workforce is no longer a concern. Take example of environmental responsibilities. As air quality improved and emissions dropped during lockdowns, businesses made promises to reduce their environmental footprint. Some are now overlooking sustainability initiatives including reduced travel etc. and returning to the old practices. In this rush to return to pre-pandemic 'normal', businesses risk repeating the mistakes of the past. We are discarding valuable lessons about adaptability, resilience, and the importance of a forward-thinking, sustainable approach. It is a must for everyone to remember the hardships and insights gained from the pandemic and commit to making these lessons a permanent part of the business strategies. Ignoring the hard-earned wisdom of the past would be a costly and, ultimately, unsustainable choice.
