Did you know that 800,000 people die by suicide each year? This is roughly one person every 40 seconds. (Read that again and let it sink in).

When I was in my first year of college, one of my long time friends took her own life. It was incredibly shocking and I couldn’t understand how or why this happened. In my mind she had everything going for her - she was well liked, extremely bright, had a loving family, and was at a top college. Her life seemed perfect. But we didn’t know about depression. Or mental health crises. Or how to talk about stress. It just wasn’t part of our vocabulary.

Although the number of people who continue to take their own lives is heartbreaking, I am happy we have added mental health and suicide into our current vocabulary. Because hopefully the more we talk about it, the less alone people will realize they are. I especially think about the young adults starting college - forging their way in new situations, adapting to looser schedules and fewer rules, and maybe being away from home for the first time. I don’t want any other young adult to experience the pain of losing a friend too soon in life.

I wish I had seen the signs and been there for my friend all those years ago but I’m here now for anyone who needs to talk. And if you, or anyone you know, is struggling with their mental health and have thoughts about suicide, here are some resources:

National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (U.S.): Call 988 or chat online at 988lifeline.org. Available 24/7 for those in crisis. Crisis Text Line: Text HOME to 741741 to connect with a trained crisis counselor. International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP): Offers global resources and support for suicide prevention efforts (iasp.info). Mental Health America (MHA): Provides tools and information for mental health screenings and support (mhanational.org). Mind (UK-based): Provides support and resources for those experiencing mental health issues (mind.org.uk).

Vacation. Merriam-Webster defines it as “a period spent away from home or business in travel or recreation.” And I’m here for it. Well, I will be in about a week.

I have not had a true vacation for over a year. I’ve taken long weekends and days off, and for a time I was not working at all and job searching. But a true vacation for over a week? It’s been too long. This past year has been a roller coaster that I won’t dwell on (because I’ve already posted enough about it) but I’m so excited to do what I love - travel to a new country, learn about the history, and eat and drink with locals. And even though I don’t get paid vacation as a contractor, I’m doing it anyway. As my very wise father said to me early in my career: work is not the end goal; it’s the means to the end goal.

And my goal is experiences. So cheers to adventure and travel!
