I believe any one selfless act from anyone can change the world.

I haven’t shared much about this in my professional realm bc it’s a vulnerable topic for me, about my family, and close to my heart. My brother Michael Leeland at 8mos old was diagnosed with something called Myelodysplastic syndrome - a rare form of leukemia. To live he needed a bone marrow transplant. Insurance required a 12-month waiting period before covering this procedure and he didn’t have that long to wait. Luckily, at 6 years old, I was found to be a perfect bone marrow match! I say luckily bc it would have been 1 in a million chance for a match outside of our family. But even with this match, without insurance coverage or the cash upfront - Michael wouldn’t be able to get his lifesaving transplant.

A 7th grader named Dameon changed the trajectory of my brother's life. He found out about my brother's condition - Dameon was in my Dad’s special Ed PE class, as he was bullied and picked on in regular PE:(. He decided one day to take out all of his savings … $60 to contribute for my brother's transplant. This one act of selflessness inspired the whole school and community of Seattle to want to help. In less than 4 weeks the community, ignited by Dameon’s gift, raised enough for my brother to get his lifesaving transplant and more.

My Dad, Jeff Leeland , set up a foundation with the remaining funds and created Sparrow Clubs USA. Matt Sampson is leading and carrying the torch of Sparrow Clubs today - and this torch is lit with an inspiration of “kids helping kids through service” with a long lasting impact!

Sparrow was inspired by Dameon and we hope to inspire others by sharing, honoring and building upon what he spurred. Helping to build empathy, a greater purpose, and inspire kids to recognize they can do amazing things through selfless acts supporting those in need. This is what Sparrow foundation is all about.

“Kids will do heroic things when they have heroic things to do.”
