Why talented employees leave (and how you can avoid this) ⬇️
First, let's start with the 3 things employees usually look for in their employment:
✅ Professional development ✅ Personal development ✅ Financial development
While all three things may not happen simultaneously in a role, a highly engaged employee will likely achieve at least two of those things within their job.
So, how do managers keep talented employees from leaving? First, managers need to realize what phase their employees are in and what opportunities they need to succeed. Then, assess how you are currently investing in your team:
Professional development: Do you have a budget for training and/or certifications that your team can utilize for upskilling and reskilling? Are you providing opportunities for career advancement?
Personal development: What social causes do they care about, and does your organization support these initiatives? Does your organization prioritize diversity, equity and inclusion for all their team members?
Financial development: Does your organization offer competitive salaries to keep up with market trends? Outside of salary, what financial incentives do employees have access to (401k match, equity, paid parental leave, etc.)?
The priority rankings of these three things can change throughout a professional's career. As managers, it is important to be intentional in connecting with your employees to learn what really drives them. Once you know that, provide clear communication so they can see a clear path to get there. If you don't, you risk your employees being unengaged and seeking employment elsewhere.
