I learned so many fascinating things about helium while reporting this story for MIT Technology Review.
Helium is used for all kinds of technologies, including semiconductors, rockets, MRI scanners, and quantum computers. But the world’s supply depends primarily on just three countries and fewer than 15 companies.
So even though it's the second most abundant element in the universe, it can be tough for researchers and hospitals to find helium at a reasonable price when they need it.
