Highlights
It’s been so difficult to get my thoughts together over the passing of John Ruhlin.
If you ever met him, you would’ve remembered it because he was an engaging, charismatic genuine human. He had a smile that took up his whole face and when he was talking to you, he was really listening. I met him about 20 years ago when I was working in NASCAR and I remember thinking who is this fascinating guy? He was working with CUTCO at the time and had some absolutely game-changing ideas about intentional gifting…early ideas of what eventually became Gift·ology. I was impressed and so intrigued. What he was saying was how I wanted to be, both personally and professionally. He believed in treating people relationally and not transactionally and in NASCAR at the time, that was a difficult concept simply because of the nature of the business. I wanted more people to meet him and hear his ideas.
John passed away recently and I was blessed to go and celebrate him last Friday. It was a beautiful and incredibly moving service with so many people saying such heartfelt things about the type of person John was. He did a lot of things. He was very successful. He had a very successful business yet that is not what people talked about. They talked about what a great friend, father and husband he was, how he showed up for people and made them feel special. They could depend on him. Above everything, they focused on his love of God. We celebrated it! We cried with joy because of it. It really invigorated my faith. And it reminded me that, no matter where I am right now, I have everything I need because I have God in my corner.
I really encourage you to read John’s book, Gift·ology. Even though it talks about the business of gifting, it’s principles and practices can be applied to pretty much every aspect of your life. It’s a reminder to be authentic in your relationships. Also, check out the Gift·ology Group to learn more about the incredible things John and his team do.
John worked hard, traveled extensively, did cool things…but in the end, he was celebrated because he was loved and showed love to others. A reminder, most people just remember how you made them feel. That should be important for you to focus on, especially now when we are so disconnected.
John showed up for me and my business. He was so supportive (a true cheerleader) and I’ll never forget that. I’m definitely going to do everything I can to keep John’s spirit alive for his beautiful family. In honor of him, can you take the time to show up for someone today? #giftology #johnruhlin
