A few days ago, Pari Purohit put out a LinkedIn post about the importance of striking the right balance with your graphic design career, especially in the first 3-5 years. It spoke about making the right choices based on your circumstances - choosing a job over money and vice a versa.
Just yesterday at The Design Village’s Can Mixer, during HireDesigners’ key note - this slide popped up and I couldn’t stop myself from taking this picture and laugh 😆.
Ok so here it goes - your CTC is directly proportional to the value you provide to the business you’re employed with. I’m not a numbers guy but since I’ve been running businesses for a while now, these are some metrics I stand by at Irregulars Alliance LLP:
Let’s say your CTC is “x”
The minimum value a business needs to derive out of you is “5x”, for it to make that spend in the first place.
Now, when you ask for a hike, which makes your ctc almost “2x”, the business would want to derive 10x out of you.
This is just a simple formula you can apply if you’re asking for a raise. The extra 5x that the company wants might be in design skills/talent, or probably in leadership and management, which only time can teach you.
Invest in yourself before you ask someone else to invest in you, the moment expectations get misaligned you’re bound to feel the burn.
The elephant in the room now is big tech offering mental salaries to people straight out of colleges or very little experience. Honestly if your circumstances are such that you’d prefer the money over the experience at small studios, by all means go for it and don’t give a shit about what people think.
You have to live your life not them, just remember after a while you might be the white elephant for any org to take on, and big tech is unpredictable AF, we’ve all seen the the way layoffs happen there.
It’s a double edged sword but think about the long game, as they say - slow and steady wins the race.
End of rant. Gm
I am not the brightest bulb when it comes to numbers and investments.
But the Jar app here has been a game changer for me. I started with investing 100 rupees a week, 8-9 months ago and now I put in INR 500 everyday(automated upi payment).
And without having to think about it, I have accumulated a substantial amount of digital gold, which I can convert to gold coins/jewellery when I wish to.
NGL it’s a vibe to be like yeahhhh boi I got golddddd, more than dollar dollar bills yo.
This isn’t an ad and would request you to do your own research around investment. But if you don’t mind putting aside small sums of money every day, it’s a great investment app to tinkle with.
