Yet when it comes to evaluating a system, a disporportionate share of the focus is given to the model performance over other parts of the infrastructure. Even an end-to-end evaluation of the system is sometimes overlooked.
But the truth is, your system is as good as the weakest component in your infrastructure.
So we should evaluate and track model performance, but we should also pay attention to other system metrics like compute and memory utilization, latency, etc.
Because you’d be amazed to see what you can learn about your system's behavior and its users' preferences when you look beyond the model performance.

Lately, I’ve been thinking about standards. As an engineer building technical products, what standards should I strive for?
The answer can be subjective, but one goal that comes to this runner’s mind is building a product so good that it could be acquired by a gold-standard entity.
If I’m striving to make electric cars, can I make one so good that Tesla would acquire it?
Or can I build a machine learning tool so effective, that it impresses the leadership of HuggingFace—not only in what it does, but also down to the code and documentation quality?
This concept helps me to think of my products on a macro basis—encompassing metrics like generated revenue, user retention, memory utilization, and test case coverage.
