If you haven’t seen Verci's recent feature in the New York Times article on membership clubs, here’s my take on the importance of social organizations rising in the city.
🏘️ 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭, 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐞𝐱𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐥𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐝𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞 Third spaces are communal, social spaces distinct from the home (first space) or work (second space).
Think community centers, town squares, libraries, cafes, and more that help orient urban spaces around local community.
Recently, however, third spaces have been fading in an increasingly digitized society. Our cities are becoming more and more anonymous — so many of us barely even know our neighbors…
🌎 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐝𝐨 𝐰𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦 𝐧𝐨𝐰? We need to be rebuilding our social institutions and creating spaces for people to come together and invest in learning and exploring with the people around us.
Throughout history, a lot of major social and cultural movements began in third spaces. From the Tianye Ge library where confucian scholars gathered to Parisian Salons that were beacons of debate that catalyzed the French Revolution.
Can we kickstart a new renaissance, can we begin tackling the grand challenges of our generation when diverse people collide and society is more collectively oriented?
🏫 𝐕𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐢 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐝𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐧𝐲𝐜 We’re striving to become a gathering space for the broader creative community in New York City.
Although a true thirdspace is accessible to the public, we’ve been expanding our curated community and focusing on events that open our doors to more people.
Another great example comes from some of our members creating clubs (e.g. James Quiambao and Abi Suresh, MBA host a weekly writers club, Elizabeth Montesano hosts a book club, and many more in the space)!
🌱𝐀 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐝𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐬 On a macro scale too, it’s exciting to see the trend of humanity bending towards the light after periods of darkness.
Whether it’s the counter-cultural movement after the Vietnam War, or the rise of new social institutions alongside Verci that are emerging after Covid ripped apart our social fabrics - it’s exciting to see a resurgence in community.
✨ 𝐃𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐟𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐝 𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐰!
Also shoutout to Anna Kodé for featuring us in an incredible piece :)
If you’re a creator, artist, or technologist in NYC looking for your creative community, this is for you
🌱 We're recruiting new members for our Verci Spring Cohort 🌷 — apply to join our collective ➡️ verci.com
Our vision with Verci is to help creative individuals reach towards their potential. And our hypothesis has two parts:
- Curating a community that shares in each others aspirations
- Creating a 24/7 #thirdspace shaped by and for the creative process
Over the last year we’ve grown to 120+ members strong: a curation of like-hearted individuals all pursuing unconventional paths.
Whether it's developing businesses, playing music late into the night, hosting events, or simply enjoying the company of like-hearted people, members at Verci have already turned the space into a shared living room for collaboration and inspiration.
In a way, we're trying to recreating the energy of a college campus (minus the institution) for people beyond the 4-year degree, at all stages of life. And rebuilding the social fabric that seems to be missing from our post-covid, modern day society.
Tag someone who'd be a good fit... or comment if you want me to send you our public spring event calendar (featuring hackathons, dinners, creative workshops, and more).
Wanted to also share some moments from past seasons below :)
