One of the debated topics in the DIE agenda is the proportional gender representation. There's often an argument that the root cause is that mainly boys are encouraged to take STEM lessons. It has been observed that even in the schools where teachers are purposefully careful about not putting any emphasys on the gender, girls still choose STEM disciplines much less often than boys. Maybe we don't take into account the societal pressure, but probably something bigger is at work.

A few days ago I went to my daughter's school Science Careers Fair. I was talking about AI based products, namely things like Tesla autopilot and Ring cameras. The reaction I got from children was surprising. My main observation was the huge difference between boys and girls coming to my stand.

Boys would come on flocks and then openly admit, that they are here just to learn about Tesla and they don't really want to study computer science. There were some of them, who were taking this path, but they already knew what they needed to know at this stage.

Girls would come alone or maybe with one friend and only if they are already interested in the subject. One 13 y.o. girl told me that "I'm not very proficient with programming, just experimenting with some ML training on Python" 🤯. The other patiently waited for the group of boys to finish asking bunch of questions about Tesla only to learn that there's no time left for her to ask about the profession itself.

What I saw was a very early manifestation of a well known fact that a man would much likely put himself forward for a position (or even a conversation) if he is 1/4 qualified, but a woman will not do so even if she is 3/4 qualified.

I don't know why it's happening, but it's happening from the early age. Just so you know.
