Gamescom last week was insane. 🎮✨

335,000 visitors from around 120 countries on-site in Cologne. Massive flashy installations by some of the biggest names in the industry, long queues to the booths, cosplay extravaganza, entertainment and innovation at its finest.

𝗠𝘆 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗚𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗺: 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲'𝘀 𝗻𝗼 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗴𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗵𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗮𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗴𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀.

However, the gaming audience has reached a level of maturity where releasing high-budget games with intricate mechanics is not enough to create a "wow" effect and make people pay for it.

To be able to succeed in this oversaturated market, the gamer (=consumer) needs to be at the heart of the experience. People play games to have fun, to unlock achievements, to be part of a community, to escape reality.

The best releases of the past year not only have stunning visuals, but also amazing storylines and create one of a kind immersive experience for players.

Take, for example, 𝗕𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗠𝘆𝘁𝗵: 𝗪𝘂𝗸𝗼𝗻𝗴, a Chinese single-player action game, that has been breaking records since its release only a week ago. It sold more than 10 million copies worldwide in just 3 days. Dubbed as a digital masterpiece steeped in Chinese culture, the game is loosely based on a Chinese novel "Journey to the West". Yet it has already amassed a fanbase globally and even boosted tourism to some of the landmarks featured in the game thanks to its incredible gameplay and traditional Chinese cultural aesthetics.

Japan, Korea, and other Chinese projects such as HoYoverse, are all putting out immersive gaming experiences that are aimed at entertaining the gamer first and foremost. Some Western studios ( CD PROJEKT RED, Larian Studios) have managed to achieve a comparable success by once again creating games for the fans.

There's a lot of catching up to do for the Western developers and publishers and 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲, in my opinion, 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 if the goal is to win back the players and stay relevant.

Excited to attend Gamescom next week! I have a couple of slots left in my calendar, and especially open for #anime content related chats.

On a side note, if you know any Creative Directors / Animation Directors / Art Directors who love and/or work in anime style, please tag in comments, I would love to connect!
