Congratulations to the UConn Class of 2024 and those ROTC Cadets who will be commissioned as Officers in the U.S. Army. I saw this article in my email today. It brought back a flood of memories of how 43 years ago I was that graduate, cadet, and soon-to-be 2LT Regular Army, leaving campus for my first duty assignment at Ft. Bragg and then on to OBC at Ft. Sill. If I had known then what I know now what would I have done differently? Not much. College prepared me fairly well for the challenges I faced. I had a successful military career of active and reserve duty spanning 22 years. My civilian career is still going strong with the company I started 28 years ago, and I am transitioning to the next generation, but I still will continue to work, learn, and lead. Amazing how those ROTC skills have served me for all these years. Be proud of the good choice you have made going ROTC. Strong skills. No debt. Being a Leader.

Last week, I attended the NAIFA Congressional Conference. Why? Advocacy matters. Every businessperson should be aware of the consequences of legislation and regulation on their business. Voting helps. Grassroots advocacy and meeting with your representatives and their staff are critical components of telling your story. A pebble should not drop inside the beltway and a tsunami hit Main Street, USA. Think tanks and consultants have theories, we have experience that we can share.
While in D.C., I am always impressed by the staffers that toil tirelessly on our nations business. These are among America’s Best and Brightest. My appreciation to Haakon Santaella, William M., Delayne Hyatt (Smith), Cruz Perez, Tyler Dever, Joshua Adams and Jackson Willis for their time, attention, questions, and passion for their work. My sincere thanks to Sen. John Cornyn and Rep. Keith Self for their valuable time to listen to our issues and concerns.
My peers make this one of the most rewarding trips yearly because I learn from the industry’s best. Then, the leadership of NAIFA and the professional staff organized it all to go smoothly and host us so that we feel welcome and valued as participants in this esteemed event. This year, our colleagues from Life Happens and the Society for Financial Services Professionals attended; their addition makes us an even more formidable organization.
A better question should be not “Why do I attend?” but “Why doesn’t every adviser attend to represent their client's interests on the hill?” Their retirement and their children’s future are too essential for us not to be present and represent them.
