Highlights
Should I be proud or cringe when the United Airlines gate agent scans my ticket and says “today is your 30th anniversary of being a Mileage Plus member”? 🤔 First instinct was to cringe.
Old memories! 25 years ago, I led the student efforts to have my university police, Brown University Police, carry their service weapons on campus…
While BUPD is POST certified and CALEA accredited, they were unarmed when they patrolled and required to stand down and wait for Providence Police for any life safety incident on campus.
A University Police has a closer relationship with its students unlike a city police force. They know about mental health resources, dorm layouts during an active shooter, and a clearer idea of who makes up the campus community.
While I had editorials written against me saying I played too much Doom (remember the game Doom?!), we showed that the University Police were highly capable of de-escalation.
As of today, Brown Police have not had an officer involved shooting.
Special shoutout to Sgt St Jean (pictured) who not only let this young kid named “Dre” wear his dept issued hat at graduation and gave me rides across campus when he saw me walking - but also physically helped my nieces who attended Brown after me move into their dorms!
