I'm sitting on a train in Germany and as usual, the internet sucks. (Deutsche Bahn, you really gotta step up your game. And yes, I know you can barely make trains run on time –or at all– and if you think you have bigger fish to fry you might even be right. Still, slow internet is THE WORST.)
On the plus side, this allows me to review some messages that I didn't really get to in the past few days and one of them is from our friends at Frameright: They just released a major update to their app and to the library of web components that make it easy for developers to introduce support for Image Display Control (IDC).
What is Image Display Control and why should you care, you might wonder? It's the fantastically simple and powerful concept of being able to control how an image gets displayed, no matter the device. I immediately got it when Marina Ekroos, one of the co-founders, described it to me a while ago. Pretty damn useful if you're a creator and you care about your images "looking right." And directly revenue relevant for brands and retailers to ensure that their product is always appropriately visible in an image and doesn't inadvertently get cropped out. Tons of other applications for this, from visual storytelling to advertising. You can read more about it on their website https://www.frameright.io/
They mix in a bit of AI to simplify things even further for the users and they have worked with industry players and standards bodies like the IPTC to make sure their original idea can blossom into a thriving ecosystem that actually has an impact. You see, up until now, most frontend devs have relied on pretty mediocre libraries that "auto crop" images when displaying them -- and the results are usually abysmal. But supporting IDC was too much work -- until now, with Frameright's libraries and web components.
I'm looking forward to seeing this thrive and take hold. (The need to create a ton of different cuts of the same image is so 1990s.)
If you're in the photo or photo-adjacent creative industry, you need to check this out.
Anyway. I'll go back to staring at the bandwidth indicator... that'll surely speed up this internet connection, right?
