It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our father, Geir Westgaard, after a 10-month battle with cancer.

Geir died on June 8, 2024, at home in Tenvik, Norway, surrounded by his wife Elisabeth Roderburg, five children, and six grandchildren. Our father lived a life filled with academic pursuits, a career dedicated to diplomacy and foreign affairs, and a personal life full of travel, love, and laughter.

Geir was born in Oslo and grew up in northern Norway in the small town of Sandnessjøen. He excelled from a young age in both academics and football. In high school, he studied abroad at Phillips Andover as an American Field Service foreign exchange student. Following his year abroad, Geir returned home to Norway for mandatory military service where he was selected for an elite Russian language program. This course helped shape both his interest in international affairs and Russian foreign policy.

Geir studied political science at the University of Oslo before attending graduate school at Columbia University for Soviet Studies. While a foreign policy fellow at Harvard University’s Weatherhead Center for International Affairs Geir continued to study and write about Russian foreign policy.

Geir’s career in the Norwegian Foreign Service included diplomatic posts in Moscow, Vilnius, Lithuania, and Washington, DC. He later served as a foreign policy advisor to the first female prime minister of Norway, Gro Harlem Brundtland. He also worked as a special advisor to the foreign minister of Norway where he was in charge of developing the country’s first High North strategy.

In 1998, he joined Statoil, now Equinor, spearheading the company’s global geopolitical strategy. Over the years, his career led him across both sides of the Atlantic, working in Stavanger, Brussels, London, Washington DC, and Oslo.

Geir’s work was both his passion and his hobby. In his spare time, he loved riding his Harley and taking his Bernese Mountain Dog, Bamse, for long walks along the fjords or through the woods. He was a voracious reader of history and geopolitics and enjoyed discussions with friends and colleagues analyzing global affairs.

Even with his illustrious career, Geir maintained that his greatest accomplishment in life was his family. As his children, he instilled in us intellectual curiosity and rigor, the importance of clarity in writing, respect for other cultures, and a silly sense of humor. We are so grateful for the time we had to learn from him and feel his love, but we will always wish we had more.

We will be holding a memorial service in Oslo on August 15 at 2:00pm in Frogner Church (Frogner kirke) in Oslo. If you would like to leave a note in remembrance, please see the link below for Geir’s memorial page:
