Highlights
EVs and even more so V2G EVs (like Renault 5 eTech - so exciting!) are the gift that keeps giving. As this WIRED magazine article explains, Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) are part of China's energy strategy and what you get when you have V2G EVs connected to a compliant energy system.
Or as a 2021 OFGEM case study identified, a £3.5bn a year in CAPEX saving to the sector plus a distributed, highly resilient energy storage system that helps accelerate bringing more renewables into the mix. Something evidenced in Canberra, Australia earlier this year when a network of V2G EVs provided part of the emergency electricity after a storm in February.
One the auto OEM side: This June on the side lines of MOVE: Mobility Re-imagined 2024 I had a chance to chat with one of NIO Europe's directors Kajsa Ivansson Sognefur. Besides the +45m successful battery swaps that their ecosystem has over seen, she shared that their battery swapping stations (aka VPPs) are "very very profitable".
As a former investor in the auto space, I can't imagine backing a legacy OEM that didn't actively go after moving up the value chain into the energy business.
The Stockholm syndrome of allowing the oil companies to make all the profits, while auto OEMs carry massive CAPEX risk of designing and building new cars, and still have the stigma of polluting the world is unfathomable.
It's not just overdue flipping this printer-ink business model, but there are so many social and environmental benefits too!

According to the Electricity System Operator (ESO), the National Grid has revealed that April was the greenest energy generation month in UK history. With the 15th April being powered by 92% zero carbon generation energy sources!
As for energy storage, as per prior studies by OFGEM and National Grid have shown, if 5% of passenger cars on UK roads are V2G EVs we could have a massive distributed storage network able to deal with the variability of renewable. Meantime the cost of fixed/site energy storage keeps falling with new material chemistries and work in the field of heat batteries.
Now for more renewables, more zero carbon energy security and more new jobs in the future of energy generation.
