Very excited to see the launch of a $25 million facility to scale Distributed Renewable Energy (DRE) market institutions!
Open Capital, Shell Foundation and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) created the Energy Access Institutions Facility (EAIF), a five-year initiative to strengthen market institutions in the Distributed Renewable Energy (DRE) sector. We aim to help these institutions scale up and drive ecosystem changes for universal access to clean energy. Our team at Open Capital led initial development and design over the past 18 months and CLASP will now manage the facility through a next phase funded by SIDA (Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency).
We have seen some very exciting progress in the off-grid energy access sector in Africa over the past 13 years and are proud to have supported >300 engagements in the sector, across 27 countries in Africa. But based on recent research we co-authored with Lighting Global/ESMAP, GOGLA, and Efficiency for Access, there are still 800 million people who live without electricity, and 75%+ in Africa.
My colleague, Duda Slawek, and I published this piece to share learnings on what we believe is still needed to reach the hardest to serve across Africa. Thanks to many of our clients and partners, who have contributed thoughts and ideas!
